Have you seen this? Kristen Bell’s Sloth Meltdown

I have been a fan of Kristen Bell since Scott found Veronica Mars on Netflix last year. Such a good show and Kristen does such a good job as Veronica Mars. I know this video clip has been around for a while, but it is so cute and funny, I had to bring it back to make sure you have seen it! This clip is from when Kristen Bell was on Ellen and was talking about her birthday present from her husband.

So. freaking. hilarious! Enjoy. Smile

Don’t forget: 5 weeks old!

Luke is 5 weeks old today. As we got up at 5:30 this morning to change a wet diaper and have some breakfast, I just can’t believe that it has been 5 weeks already since he was born at 5:29am!

Here are some pics from the last week. . .

On May 16th. . .

IMG_0341IMG_0342

One morning this last week, when Luke was sleeping on my chest <—my favorite! I started to think of the things that I never want to forget about these first few weeks of Luke’s life. . .

How warm he is against my chest.

His big, beautiful blue eyes. (looking at me!)

IMG_0345

How he fits just perfectly.

How he squirms his little body on my chest as he is falling asleep.

IMG_0348

How his butt fits into my hand.

IMG_0349

His expressions in the bath as the water comes up around his body.

IMG_0357

How much better nap time is with him.

IMG_0359

And how much I love him!

Schell’s Lager Lauf 6K

image

Yesterday, Scott and I ran the first annual Schell’s Lager Lauf 6K. It was put on by Schell’s brewery, a local brewery in the town of New Ulm, MN. It promised to replace the water stations with beer on the race course and talked about brats and beer after the race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all it promised to be. . .

It was a nice day. Low 80s and cloudy. It sprinkled for a few minutes before the start of the race. We were thankful for the cloudy skies, otherwise we would have died on the course under hot sun.

The start was right in front of the brewery. They had over 1000 participants for both races, 6K and 12K. My Mom and Dad came to spectate and watch the baby and dog while we ran. Unfortunately, the start was about 1/3 mile down the road from the entrance into the brewery. And they didn’t allow dogs past the entrance. We were walking towards the start, with the dog, and when we got to the entrance and a lady said, “Sorry, no dogs, because of the birds.” We were like, “Umm, ok. Because of the birds, weird, but whatever.” So, we left my  parents, the dog, and baby and went to the start. And when we got to the brewery, we saw “the birds.” Lots of huge peacocks just wondering around the grounds. There was even one with all his feathers out. Crazy. I guess I can understand why they don’t allow dogs. . . Abby would have loved to chase them!

They started the 12K about 10 minutes before the 6K and I was in the port-a-potty when the 12K started – with a huge cannon blast –> talk about scary!

The course itself was pretty hilly. There was a crazy huge hill in between mile 1 and 2. And the promise of beer on the course was lacking. The first water stop, was just water! We felt sorta bad for the people manning the station. We heard them saying over and over, “Sorry, just water, beer at the next one.” And we had to run at least another mile before we got to the next “water” stop, which they had beer at, but just small 1 oz glasses. And they had a specific area where you could drink it, so you couldn’t even keep walking while you drank the beer. Scott took a glass, but I just kept walking. .. With the huge hill in the beginning, the warmer weather, and running farther than I have since the baby was born. . . I was pretty tired! We ended up having to walk a few times, more than I would have liked. . .  The highlight of the course for me, was the huge downhill we got to run down – Scott and I skipped down it!

We finished in 39.15.

IMG_0362IMG_0363

And those brats and beer after the race. . . available for $3 each! No free beer or brats for runners. Major disappointment!

Overall, it was a challenging course, but a fun 6K. We are already looking forward to doing it again next year. . . maybe even doing the 12K! I have already called dibs on not pushing the jogging stroller up the huge hill. Winking smile

Someone was pretty tuckered out after spending the morning with Grandma and Grandpa. . .

Sausage and broccoli stoup

I haven’t done much cooking since the baby was born, but I made this recipe a while ago and it was easy and yummy. . . so I had to share it with you!

‘stoup’ –> thicker than soup and thinner than stew according to Rachel Ray

Thick and flavorful. Slightly spicy with the spicy turkey sausage. Filling with the addition of pasta. And sneaking in some veggies with the addition of broccoli!

021

The original recipe (for Sausage-and-broccoli rabe stoup) can be found here from Rachel Ray Everyday Magazine.

017022

Here is the recipe with the changes I made – based on what I had in the house.

Sausage and broccoli stoup
1 large head broccoli – cut into small pieces
2 T extra-virgin olive oil
1 lb hot turkey sausage
1 large onion – chopped
3 cloves garlic – chopped
32 ounces chicken stock
28 ounce can stewed tomatoes
1 1/2 cups small shell pasta
Parmesan cheese – for sprinkling

1. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil, salt it, and add broccoli and boil for about 3 minutes. Drain and cool.

2. In a soup pot, heat the oil over medium high heat. Add the sausage and cook until browned. Add onion and garlic and cook until softened. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Add the chicken stock, tomatoes and 2 cups of water and bring to a boil.

4. Stir in broccoli and bring back to a boil.

5. Add pasta and cook until al dente.

6. Top with cheese and serve.

First Mother’s Day and 4 weeks old!

Yesterday was my first Mother’s Day as a Mom!

IMG_0318

We celebrated by snuggling in bed. . . Abby and Luke are becoming best buddies!

 IMG_0324

Then, we hit the road to drive up to the cities to have brunch with Scott’s family. Then, we headed over to my parent’s house to hang out for the afternoon and have dinner. Mom was nice enough to watch after Luke while Scott and I took Abby and Dad for a run. It was a gorgeous day – 70s and sunny – perfect for an afternoon run. Dad grilled teriyaki chicken. Paired with salad with Byerly’s bleu cheese dressing and grilled toast –> perfection!

IMG_0328

Even being less than a month old, Luke managed to get me a present! (I think he had help from Dad!) I love the movie Ratatouille,

so I got my very own DVD of it (Luke and I will be watching it very soon.).  And 2 new pink pens for work.

Abby pretended not to sleep in the car on the way home! She usually won’t lay her head down in the car, so she’ll close her eyes and do the “I’m not sleeping” head bob. She spent the morning with my Dad doing landscaping, and was pretty tuckered out from following him around, as well as, Olivia (a very energetic 9 year old girl) playing with her!

IMG_0329

We got home just in time to get ready for bed.

IMG_0317

Our new thing this week is a bedtime routine! Bath, PJs, Books, and bedtime feeding. So far so good!

Our newborn pictures are supposed to be ready this week! I can’t wait to see them and to share them with you guys. Also, we still need to send out our baby announcements (I am waiting for the newborn pictures) – so hopefully will be able to do those this week too.

And Scott and I are doing a 6K on Saturday! More details on that this weekend. Smile

Must have’s: Newborn edition

So, now that I have been a Mom for a over 3 weeks. . . time for my must have’s: newborn edition!

I am sure this is an ever changing list as Luke continues to grow and change, but here are a few items that have made the last 2 weeks a little better. . .

Halo sleep wrap
Wraps around the body and helps them feel secure. Zips up from the bottom for easy diaper access in the middle of the night! Helps to keep them warm without extra blankets in the crib (SIDS risk).

IMG_0261

Good absorbent burp cloths
I got mine from Etsy – cute puppy pattern from A Twisted Thread!

Burp Cloth Set for Baby Boy - Puppy Dogs & Pawprints

Lots of blankets
Good for swaddling, catching spit up, laying on the floor, covering up in the car seat, etc. . . We are loving the Aden and Anais Swaddle Wraps.

aden + anais 4 Pack Muslin Swaddle Wrap

Sleepers with snaps
Originally, we thought that sleepers with zippers would be better, but you have to unzip the whole sleeper to get to the diaper, which makes the baby cold and more crying ensues!

IMG_0188

Soothies pacifier

IMG_0200IMG_0244

And just recently: bottle warmer – so nice for middle of the night!

Finally: someone to be up in the middle of the night and share in the sleep deprivation with you. . . Scott has been excellent with this! It was not fun to send him back to work this week after having him home with us for 3 weeks! Sad smileIMG_0131IMG_0168

Return to running

This week I did my first post-baby run!

It was slow and I was tired but it felt good to run without an 8 pound baby in my belly.

I have run 3 times already and each time feels a little better. Still haven’t gone more than 2 miles at a pretty slow pace, but I slowed down over the course of 9 months, so I can’t expect to jump right back into it less than 3 weeks of having the baby.

One thing I didn’t expect was so much belly jiggle! It makes sense that it takes 9 months for the uterus to grow with the baby.  . . and it takes 4-6 weeks for it to go back to it’s pre-baby size. I did buy a post-partum support belt to help with running.

source

Basically it just wraps around your mid-section and helps to hold things in place and minimizes jiggling! Super helpful with runs.

The other thing: must have a very supportive sports bra! I’m just sayin’. Smile

I wasn’t sure how long after having Luke that I would feel up to running, so I am very happy to be less than 3 weeks out and already putting in some miles. It helps relieve stress, lose some baby weight and just makes me feel better. . . All of which makes me a much better Mom to Luke and wife to Scott!

Now. . . how about some cupcakes! Winking smile

2 weeks!

Guess who was two weeks old yesterday?

IMG_0249

This guy!

We celebrated with a trip to Target, Once Upon A Child, and Arby’s for lunch. We also took our BOB stroller out for it’s inaugural walk.

Someone surprised Mom and Dad during tummy time by rolling over 3 times! (For those of you who don’t know. . . babies aren’t supposed to do that until 4 months…)

Over the past week. . .

  • we  drove to Wisconsin for newborn pictures. We had the same photographer who did our wedding photos, Jodee at Life and Style Photography
  • I had my first caramel skim latte from Caribou since having Luke

IMG_0219

  • Abby got used to sharing her backseat with a car seat

IMG_0217

  • We had lots of snuggling time

IMG_0221IMG_0230

  • I had my first day all alone with Luke (and we both survived)

IMG_0246

  • Luke had his first bottle

IMG_0236

  • And loves his swing!

IMG_0215

In some ways I can’t believe he is already two weeks old, but on the other hand, it seems like life without this little guy was so long ago!
