Weekend Update–short and sweet

Monday already? How did that happen?? I’m headed off to work in a few minutes, but wanted to pop in quick and share a few pictures from our short and sweet weekend. . .

Fun times with Grandpa Tom. Luke thought his physical therapy bands were pretty cool. . .

And Dad did some lifting. . .

Kicked off the weekend by teaching pump at the YMCA.

Panera for lunch. Autumn squash soup and pumpkin cookies for the win. And don’t get me started on Luke’s shirt. Sad smile

Family dinner.

and cold stone. birthday cake batter with graham cracker crumbs for me and mint Oreo for Scott.

And I fully admit, that I might have a Panera problem. Caramel latte (skinny, no whip!) and a strawberry granola yogurt parfait.

Sunday was spent working some hours in Urgent Care, dinner with my in-laws, and a quick stop at my parent’s house for Luke to take a bath before bed on our way back to Wisconsin.

And now, off to work. Smile

Happy Monday!

How was your weekend??

I am linking up with Katie (and Erin) for Marvelous in my Monday!

Friday Favorites {currently}

Hi! Happy Friday. Smile We made it. Fist bump.
I am headed to Minnesota today. I have some things to do for work, then the weekend! Teaching BODYPUMP, family time and a little bit of work on Sunday. Should be a good weekend!
I’m switching it up a bit this Friday and sharing a little snapshot of what life is currently like in the R4C house. . . enjoy and feel free to share your “currently. . .”
Current Book:

I just started this one. .. I’ll let you know what I think of it when I’m done. . .

Current TV Show:

can’t stop, won’t stop watching Prison Break.

However, Survivor started again this week and that is probably my all time favorite show.

Current Excitement:

Getting ready to go to Vegas in 2 weeks with my husband and my sister, Laura!!

Current Exercise:

Still keeping it real with teaching BODYPUMP 1-2 times per week and running 4-5 times per week.

Mankato peeps – I’ll be teaching pump tomorrow morning at 8:15 at the YMCA!

Current Song:

I am working on learning the choreography for some older BODYPUMP releases and I am loving the squat track song in 64 – “More than a Feeling”

Current Bane of My Existence:

Living apart from Scott and having to single parent a three year old. It is HARD. Thankfully – it’s going to be over in less than a month!

Current Outfit:

Still loving these shorts from lulu + a sweatshirt. because fall in MN means trying to wear shorts for as long as possible but staying warm at the same time.

Current Food:

I made this stir fry this week and forgot how delicious and easy it is. And perfect for leftovers for the rest of the week.

Current Drink:

Spark. Fruit punch in the morning. Grape in the afternoon. Orange during workouts. I might have a problem. Winking smile

Current Indulgence:

Laura made carmelitas this week and left a container of them for me. They were SO good.

5 Cross Fit Truths

Whether you’ve been doing cross fit for a while, are still new or thinking about trying it out. .. here are a few tips to help you out and what I wish I would have known before my first class. . . and what I keep in mind every time I go for a workout. Smile

1. you won’t know what the gibberish on the board means for a while. . .

after a few months, there are still things that I’ve never seen before or don’t know the abbreviations. Thankfully everyone, like seriously everyone, at the box are so nice and will tell you what it means if you just ask. PS – don’t be afraid to ask anything at anytime to your fellow cross fitters or to the coaches. Cross Fit is amazing for the team atmosphere, so even though every movement (unless you are doing a partner workout) is very individualized, there is the support and help from the group.

2. you will destroy your hands no matter how much chalk you use. Ahhh it seems so nice and easy, right? Just put a little chalk on your hands and it will all be ok. Nope. Not true. Not even a little bit. Now, I haven’t (knock on wood) torn open my hands but I am sporting some pretty nice calluses. And they didn’t get there easily or just overnight. It took really the past two months to slowly (and sometimes painfully) build them up. Remember to use the chalk though. .. even though it doesn’t magically heal your hands, it does help. A lot. And you look pretty B.A. leaving the gym with chalk handprints all over your pants, am I right? Winking smile

3. No matter what the WOD, you will feel like you are going to die at some point during it. Oh man, before starting CF, I didn’t believe there was any way you could get in a good workout if the WOD was only AMRAP 8 minutes (as many reps as possible in 8 minutes). But I am here to tell you that not only is it 100% possible to get a good butt kicking in those 8 minutes, at the end of those 8 minutes, all you want to do is lay on the floor and thank goodness that it wasn’t AMRAP 9 minutes.

4. There will be some moves that you L.O.V.E. and some that you H.A.T.E. For me – I love pull ups, box jumps, and cleans. I loathe snatch, running (ironic, I know – but I don’t like 200/400 sprints. . . give me 5 miles any day over those distances), and turkish get ups . .. my left side just doesn’t like to do them. Winking smile

5. you are going to love it Smile Pure and simple. Cross Fit is awesome. It is challenging. And fun. And different.

Have you tried out Cross Fit? What truths would you share??

Finally finished refinishing and reupholstering 2 chairs for my office.

And the highlight of my two days off – my sister, Laura, coming over and making me an amazing dinner (including these!) and watching Pitch Perfect 2 together.

An afternoon walk to soak in a beautiful sunshine fall day.

Friday Favorites: This or That

Woo hoo for Friday! #amiright

Headed up to the Lake today to soak in one last boat ride before taking the boat out for the winter (tear. . .). Other than that, nothing too much planned. my hair is naturally straight, so I just go with it. But honestly, 90% of the time, ponytail.

Three Squares or Graze All Day?

Both! I like to eat 3 meals + snacks!

Right handed or left handed?

Beach or Mountains?

tough one! probably the beach. preferably with a cocktail.

Mac or PC?

Shy or Outgoing?

Moving to a new town {10 tips}

As you know, a few months ago, I moved from Minnesota to Wisconsin for a new job. Thankfully, I knew quite a bit about the new town I was moving to – I went to undergrad here and my sisters live here. . . but there will always be a period of adjustment when you move to a new place. . . and I thought I would share a few (10!) of my tips on moving to a new town or checking out a new place. . .

1. get involved.  are you a runner? join a running club. Like to cook? check out cooking opportunities or new to you grocery stores. Try out the free week long memberships to the fitness clubs in town. If you have kids, find the Children’s museum or the YMCA programs.

2. try new things. Cross Fit was something new for me and it gave me an immediate new group of friends in the new place.

3. find new favorites. check out the local coffee shops, or even the local store of your favorite chain. There are two Caribou Coffees in town, and you bet those were one of the first places I checked out. I’ve also been taking Luke to check out the local coffee houses in town and that’s been fun too.

4. keep your routine. don’t change too much at once. that can be super overwhelming. With a 3 year old, it’s been pretty easy to keep a routine. Morning routine, school/work, dinner, play time, bedtime, repeat.

5. ask for help. co-workers, that person next to you in BODYPUMP class, your new neighbors. Don’t be afraid to get suggestions. Their favorite pizza place or take-out Chinese in town. Where they get their dry cleaning done or what they are doing on Friday night.

6. don’t feel like you have to figure it all out at once. take your time to check out everything, because it can be super overwhelming at times. but, remember there is no rush to find everything all at once. enjoy the time finding new places.

7. make it feel like home. I already have my favorite chair at Caribou, know where I like to park at Target, and put up Luke’s art work on the refrigerator. Whatever home means to you, do that!

8. go outside your comfort zone. starting cross fit was totally outside my comfort zone, but it was hands down the best decision I made when I moved. You never know until you try and it is a great way to try new things in a new town.

9. freebies. you know those free magazines and newspapers (usually found at the grocery store) – grab those each month and look for new activities or events to check out. a great way to get a feel and experience your new town. love that the splash pad in town is free!

10. stay home. yup, so get out there and do things, but take time to enjoy your new place, and having some down time to adjust is just as important, so remember to take care of yourself and enjoy some quiet time.

Have you ever moved to a new town? Tips??

Blue Apron Meal Service Review

So, last week, I had the opportunity to try out Blue Apron.

I’ve seen other bloggers rave about their food, convenience and awesomeness. And I wanted to try it for myself. Spoiler alert – so yummy, I tried lots of new things, but I spent more time preparing dinner than I normally would have. . .. read on for the full review and a promo code!

*trying new things! this was probably the most fun thing about trying Blue Apron is that I made things I would have never tried at home. Like I am still thinking about those chicken burgers days later. Totally going to have to make those again soon!

*excellent portion sizes. We tried out the 2 person meal plan and it was the perfect amount of food for both of us for dinner. I would probably do the family plan next time because leftovers are my main staple for lunches at work and with the 2 person plan = no leftovers.

*step by step directions with pictures. so helpful!

*liked the fact that there was nutritional information. A nice perk to dinner was knowing that it was good, restaurant quality food but I wasn’t eating a bazillion calories.

*no grocery shopping! Sometimes, the last thing I want to do after a long day at work is head to the grocery store. With Blue Apron, everything (like every single thing **except for standard pantry ingredients – salt, pepper and olive oil) are in that box sitting on your front step when you get home.

*need some cooking knowledge. I do a fair amount of cooking, so it wasn’t too tough to follow the directions, but I feel like my husband (who doesn’t really cook other than making a mean bowl of cereal) might have struggled a little bit with the directions.

*would have liked more specific directions for amounts. Most of the directions state add salt and pepper to taste or add as much as desired for level of spice.

*would have liked cooking tips – i.e. how to peel the flipping garlic.

*wish there was an option to choose specific meals. When you pick the 2 person vs family plan, you can’t pick meals from the family plan if you are just doing the 2 person plan. And within the 2 person plan, you can’t pick from all 6 options, you can pick this group of 3 meals or that group of 3 meals, which isn’t the greatest if there is an option within those 3 that you don’t like or want. Again, not a deal breaker but just a bummer.

*longer prep time. *for me. It usually took between 30-45 minutes to prep and make dinner with the Blue Apron meals which is longer than usual for me to spend in the kitchen, especially on a weeknight. BUT, I think the extra time was totally worth it.

Overall, I really enjoyed my meals from Blue Apron and I would anticipate using their service again in the future for when I am in a meal rut and want to try something new!

Want to try Blue Apron? Use this link to get 2 meals FREE!!

**I was sent Blue Apron meals in exchange for a review. But, as usual, all opinions are 100% my own! Smile
