Weekending. . . sunshine + snow

Hey there! Happy Monday. And happy Leap Day!

Did you have a good weekend??

Ours went by way to fast!

Nice enough weather to walk home from school on Friday!

Errands on Saturday = Target + Sam’s Club

52 degrees = family run!

Dinner with Scott’s family on Saturday night at Red Robin. Bonsai burger ftw.

Sunday morning was windy + snowy. So we stayed inside and played play d’oh.

The rest of Sunday included: laundry, Scott fixing a leaky downstairs shower facet, 3 mile treadmill run and catching up on the Amazing Race.

And Abby thinking she should be fed dinner at 3pm. Smile

Hope you had a great one. . . what were you up to?

I am linking up with Katie (and Erin) for Marvelous in my Monday!

Instructor Confession {BODYPUMP}

Have you ever been in an aerobics class and looked at the instructor and wondered “how do they do it”?

Talk, encourage, remember the cues, correct form all while lifting heavy weights when I am dying just trying to lift my own weights? Yup, me too. And so today, I thought I would share some instructor secrets and confessions.

1. I am totally dying too.

Yup, all that weight on my bar. Damn, it’s heavy. And I probably want to put the bar down. And more often than not, I am thinking: “geez what was I thinking putting so much weight on this darn bar today?” But, seeing your face, focused and pushing yourself, gives me the energy to get through. And I know I say this in class, but it’s true, we are in this together and we will finish together. #truth

2. Being in front of the class pushes me to work harder.

As a Les Mills instructor, we are taught to lift “inspiring” weights. Now, that means something different for each  person, but I know that when I am teaching, I go heavier than I might if I wasn’t in front of 50 people. . .

3. I want you to get stronger.

Yup. That is why I am always encouraging you to put more weight on your bar (when you are ready, of course!) and to challenge yourself. I’m up in front because I believe in the awesomeness that is BODYPUMP and I know it can challenge you and change you in ways you may have never expected, but you have to be open to that change. And I am here to help you do it.

4. I am checking form – always – and it’s not to pick on you, I don’t want you to get hurt + I want you to get the best results you can!! See above. I am here to help you. That’s it. No other motive. So, if you have questions – ask! Please. I love when people come and ask me questions on form, weight selection, who sings the bicep track song. Anything that gets you more engaged and excited about class, I’m here to share that with you!

5. I teach because I love it.

Let’s be honest, no one is getting rich teaching at the YMCA. Yes, teaching does help to fund my Fabletics habit, but that’s not why I am up in the front. I want to share my energy and enthusiasm with you. And I think that is the mark of a good instructor and you can tell which ones LOVE it and which ones are just there to clock in some time. Stick with the ones that love it and you will never go back.

6. I say the same things over and over again because they are IMPORTANT. Seriously, you don’t want your knees to go over your toes with squats or lunges because you could seriously mess up your knees, hips or back if you don’t. And the bar shouldn’t touch your chest during the chest track! If it does, you are bringing the bar too low, which puts the stress on your shoulders and takes the focus off the pecs. See. . . there is a reason behind everything I say in class, so please, do yourself a favor and just double check that you are actively listening and adjust as needed.

7. I instruct how I would like to be taught.

Each instructor has their own way of teaching and some you like and some you don’t, right? I love the music in pump, so I make sure that while I give the appropriate cues, I don’t talk the whole time over the music, because I hate when other instructors do that. . . IMHO. To each their own, right?

8. Sometimes the last thing I want to do is teach a class. It’s been a long day or my bed is really warm but it is so amazing to me that as soon as I walk in the doors, blast some pump music, I am so happy to be there and that I get to teach. That’s right, it’s not something I have to do or need to do, it’s something I GET to do. And that is awesome.

9. I spend way more time picking out my outfits on the days I teach than I’d care to admit. . . I mean, when you are in front of 50+ people who are going to spending the hour looking at you, it’s important you look good and extra important that your pants aren’t see thru. Winking smile

10. I bust mine to kick yours. Every time.

And I totally need to get this shirt.

Are you an instructor? Any confessions to share??

Weekending. . . working + low key fun

Hey there. .. happy Monday. Anyone else’s weekend go by WAY too fast?

Despite having to work all weekend long, we still managed to have some fun around here.

Taught early morning pump.

And since I didn’t have to work on Friday, we took advantage of the day and took Luke to the Children’s Museum.

Family run.

Abby watches for me to come home every night.

Couch time + watching Paw Patrol.

And a visit from Scott’s family..  . I missed them while I was at work, but Luke had tons of fun playing!

And I’ll leave you with this. . .

Hope you had a great one. . . what were you up to?

Friday: Lukie sayings {3 1/2 years old}

Happy Friday! Was it just me or did this seem like the longest week ever? I’m not sure why, nothing crazy happened, but I’m happy it’s the weekend!!

Kids say the craziest things. I seriously cannot believe some of things that Luke comes up with. . .

Gina does a fun series about all the crazy/silly/whaaaaat things that comes out of her little girls mouth.

And I thought I would do a similar thing to help remember and laugh at some the things that Luke says.

Hope this gives you a laugh today!

Mom: “Lukie are you in your bedroom?”
Silence. . . running feet.
Luke: “Ummm yes I am!”

Grandma that’s Jesus. He was a baby in Gods tummy.

Abby stop looking out my window

I didn’t want my fingernails cut {two days ago} … I can’t make claws now!

When Luke counts, he says fourteen, FIVE teen, sixteen.

The alphabet according to Luke: A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I-K-A-L-M-O-P

We were in the car and I was listening to a BODYPUMP song (GDFR by Flo Rida) and the lyrics are “This is goin’ down for real.”

and so Luke asks “Mommy, can it go up for real?”
To which I answered “Yup, good job!”
And then there was a pause while the song kept playing and then he asked “Mom, can it go down for pretend?”
{this kid is SO smart sometimes!}

At the airport going through security.

Security: “What’s your name?”
Luke: “Lukie Thompson”
Security: “Who’s with you today?”
Luke: “Daddy Thompson and Mommy Thompson.”

Seriously, that kid!

And now onto the weekend. . . .I have to work all weekend but I’m making the best of it. Planning to fit in a few runs (hopefully warm enough for family runs outside!) and finishing up season 4 of Scandal. #goals

Weekending. . . Valentine’s Day

Oh Monday . . .

Am I right?

Oh well, at least it was a good weekend around here!

I kicked off the weekend with my first run of half marathon training.

I haven’t actually signed up for a race yet . . . thinking the Eau Claire half marathon in May, but figured I should start getting in some more miles.

Coffee surprise from the husband. Made my day.

Luke and I got ready to go visit Grandma Mary.

Scott, Luke and I went out to dinner with her on Friday night.

Kicked off Saturday with a BODYPUMP class. Went back a few releases to 90 – love that triceps track. Any P!NK song is a winner in my book.

Afternoon movie.

Trip to TJ’s.

Picked up some dangerous things.

Including these. . .

Valentine’s morning.

Low key Sunday = lots of Scandal + laundry. Seriously, that show is SO addicting. On Season 4 now.

And a Valentine’s Day dinner courtesy of my amazing husband.

My favorite’s – grilled steak, roasted asparagus and

these sweet potato tots.

And Abby always puts herself to bed about 9pm. Cutest thing ever.

Hope you had a great one. . . what were you up to?

BODYPUMP 96 {review!}

So, as you all know, I am a Les Mills BODYPUMP instructor and I teach a few times a week at  the YMCA in Mankato!

If you aren’t familiar with BODYPUMP, check out my “what is BODYPUMP? post.” And find a class near you.

Interested in becoming an instructor? Check out my posts about that too.

Every quarter, Les Mills puts together new moves and music for the latest release.I think that it almost always takes me a few times of doing a new release before I really love it. Now, there is usually a song or two that just aren’t my favorite for whatever reason. . . but overall, I really have enjoyed all the releases so far.

I took my training on BODYPUMP 84.

Since then, I have learned the releases since then – 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95 and now 96. (Other reviews here) I also have learned 64, 80, 82 and 83, since some other instructors at the YMCA had those training DVDs.

So, after teaching it for a few weeks, here are my thoughts on the very latest release. . .

#1: Warm up – “Five More Hours”

Great warm up song. I love singing along – “we’re just getting started. . .” Nice mix of the standard moves to get the body ready for the workout. And I love when they put power presses in the warm up – great full body move to get the body going.

#2: Squats – “Blow Your Mind”

Standard squat track with 3 sets in our 3 different stances. I like the 1/2/1 combo – you can really feel the burn and then you hit it home with bottom halves!

#3: Chest – “Immortals”

*Our classes are so big at the YMCA that we don’t have enough weights for people to do the A-press, so I teach this one with the bar and it. is. killer. and. awesome. I also love when they mix pushups into the track. It really helps to break up the track and isolate the pecs for a killer chest track.

#4: Back – “The Thrill”

Meh. This is probably my least favorite track of this release. It gets the job done and I like the combo of the standard back track moves. It’s a back to basics back track. And that’s always a good thing.

#5: Triceps – “Hallelujah”

Love this song and love this track. The combo of extension, dips and pushups = awesome triceps isolation. And it’s such an inspiring song that you can’t help but give it your all.

#6: Biceps – “Wobble

Hands down, this is my new all time favorite song/track. I dare you not to smile while doing this one! And I have to sing along – ooh ooh baby!! Bonus points for being a good bicep workout – love the combo of bicep row + pulses.

#7:  Lunges – “Peanut Butter Jelly”

Such a naughty song, but I still love it. It has a great beat and it perfect for lunges. I really like that we pulse THEN do more lunges afterwards. My calves are feeling it when the 5 minutes are done! And that last set of squats?! – whoa burning quads!

#8: Shoulders – “Addicted to a  Memory”

At first, I was sad that there were no pushups in this track, but OMG, all of those overhead presses kill it. I’m a fan of rear deltoid raises so I love that the track starts with a nice long set of those.

#9: Core – “Want to Want Me ”

I think this is one of the more challenging core tracks we’ve had in a while. The pulse crunches are killer and great for core isolation.

#10: Cool down – “Adore”

Standard cool down/stretch. Good ending to a great release!

Overall, I thought this was a really strong release. Good music. A great mix of back to basics and BODYPUMP awesomeness. Lots of quick transitions with minimal breaks and making every rep count.

But, I am already excited about seeing what’s in store for BP97! Music is coming out this weekend!!

Have you done BP96??? What did you think?

Friday Favorites: Blizzard!

Happy Friday!! Anyone else pumped that it’s almost the weekend??

Other than teaching BODYPUMP tomorrow morning, we don’t have any plans and I am loving it. Smile

On Tuesday this week we had a fun day of snow. Pretty much everything around here closed early because of the snow + wind. When I picked Luke up from school he said “Mom, there is a major blizzard out there!!”

I was able to pick him up early and we came home and he played and played and played. I couldn’t help but smile that he was playing on the beach with sand earlier this week and then he was just as happy in the snow in our front yard.

Abby had fun too.

It was the perfect afternoon with no other obligations and just having the time to play.

And then Luke went out again to “help” Dad shovel. . . aka more snow play time. Winking smile

And now off to work and then the weekend!

Have a great one! Whatcha up to??
