Blogging pet peeves

So, whenever I read a new blog, I look for a few key things that encourages me to stick around. And I always wonder what makes people continue to read my blog or to click away. . . so I thought that I would share my key blogging pet peeves, in hopes, that you would share yours too. . . and maybe we can all learn a bit more about what different people look for when reading blogs.

When I first click on a new blog, I look for 3 things:

#1. An about me section with a picture. I like to read a brief summary of what their blog is about and I love to see a picture of the person writing – it helps me feel engaged by the blogger.

#2. Easy links to social media. If I find a new blog that I love, I want to follow that blogger on social media. And I want it to be super easy to do that!

ScreenHunter_154 Feb. 18 12.58

#3. Easy to read text. No crazy font. The type is centered and doesn’t go across the whole screen – I think that is super hard to read – IMHO.

And then when I start reading their posts, I look for 3 more things:

#4. Easy to comment. You know those blogs that have the code you have to type in to comment, those things are the worst! And they will often deter me from commenting.

#5. Comment reply – remember that comment reply notification plugin? I think that is super important to have and I hate when I comment and the blogger comments back, but I don’t know it because they don’t have the plugin installed.

#6. The ability to pin their post.

ScreenHunter_152 Feb. 17 14.58

Some bloggers, don’t have the Pinterest plugin –> that plugin that gives you the option of clicking the Pinterest button to easily pin their post. So frustrating when I love their post but I can’t pin it!

And one more thing.  ..

#7. Apologizing for being gone. This is one of my personal pet peeves. The “I’m sorry I disappeared on you guys” or “I’m sorry that I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had a chance to post.” I actually LOVE that you are too busy to post! Just fill me in on all the exciting stuff you were up to while you were gone. Never apologize for having a life and living that life! Ok, I’ll step down from my soap box now. . . Winking smile

So, what are your must-haves when you read a blog? Or pet-peeves?

  1. Ahhhh, I don’t think I have the pinning plugin on mine! I should work on this 🙂 Can we blame the fact that I’m not very tech savvy?! I love to find bloggers who I could be (and eventually become and consider to be) real life friends. There are so many awesome ladies, like you, that I really care about and am excited for when great things happen in their lives. It really is an amazing community!

  2. 1. I want to see photos, pictures they took not just posted some random internet photo. I just can’t get into a blog without seeing what I’m reading about.

    2. Super small font. So small I have a hard time reading the blog.. I give up!

    3. Definitely your #1.. I also like to know something about the blogger! More the better!

    4. Not posting every day.. or at least every 2 days. I lose interest if I don’t see new posts.

    5. Not keeping it real… I like to hear about struggles and good times too. Life is not all rainbows and sunshine.. I want to relate!

    6. Not enough older .. 38, 40+ year old bloggers. We are so under represented in the running blogging world.

    7. Really super healthy, bad food pix.. I can’t believe what some people eat.. looks like vomit on a plate.. I don’t need to see that.. If it doesn’t look appealing to eat, don’t post it.

    8. Typo’s never bother me.. We are all human.. and I make a lot of them..Typo’s… not out to populate the world.. ;0)

    9. Bloggers.. not being able to laugh at themselves.. I love humorous posts even if I’m not funny… I love reading the blogs that make me laugh.. or at least smile.

    10. Not understanding how every blog I read gets “free stuff” to give away. How does one get free running stuff?

Love your blog.. I’m from MN too so it’s nice to read about another blogger from our State.

  3. My biggest pet peeve is when bloggers comment just to comment. That doesn’t really have anything to do with their blogging format but seriously, if you’re going to take the time to say something, make it worthwhile! Obviously, IMHO 😉

  4. I’m with you on the ease of commenting thing! I also go straight to the about me page. I try to find things I have in common with that blogger, otherwise I probably won’t be all that interested in reading about their day-to-day.
This is going to sound super nit-picky, but here’s my biggest blogging pet peeve. When people use “work out” (verb) and “workout”(noun) incorrectly. I know it’s silly to get annoyed by that because people do it all the time, but it bugs me!

  5. Agreed on making commenting easy! If I have to sign into an account or whatever, I just won’t bother. Whoops!

I also dislike text that isn’t left aligned, I find it makes it really difficult to read <– I know this is super picky though!

  6. You make such a good point about the whole “I’m sorry I was away” thing. I think I may be guilty of that in the past. Hopefully I remembered to follow it up with why I was busy…and hopefully it wasn’t just that my job was taking over my life lol. I also like blogs that are very clean looking and very user friendly. For instance, if I type something into their search bar, I want it to pull up the articles I’m actually thinking about and not something tangentially relevant.

  7. I’m glad I finally added my picture and an “About Me” section with my redesign!! 😉 And thank you for #7! I always feel guilty when I am away for a little while, but you really put that into a great perspective! Being busy is a GOOD thing 🙂

  8. I totally agree with you on the easy commenting one- If it takes longer than 3 seconds for me to figure out how to comment…I’m gone!

  10. So of us are bloggers in training….lol! I just learned this week how to embed pins in my posts. I would love to figure out how to get an About Me section on my homepage, but have not figured out if that is a plugin or theme or what yet. Any tips you have I would greatly appreciate!

No worries – no matter where you are in your blogging life, there is always more to do. There is an about me plugin that I use for my site!!

  11. I don’t have the pin button – I need to get on that! I’m also not on twitter or Instagram…I need to get on that too. I’m behind the times!

One blogging pet peeve I have is sites that aren’t easy to read via the mobile version. I read blogs on my cellphone most of the time & some blogs have such tiny font it is hard to read!

    This was a great post!

#1. You NEED the pin button. I really wanted to Pin your brownie cookie post but couldn’t. #2. I would love for you to be on IG – think of all the cute Atlas pics you could post. You need to put joining IG (at least) on your to-do list for this weekend. #3. How does my blog look on your cell phone? Is it ok, or do I need to make some changes?

  12. Jodi

I love the ending of this post: ” Never apologize for having a life and living that life!” That is so true.

  13. I agree with all those things!!! Someday I will jump on the self hosting bandwagon and then I can have all those plug ins. I’m hoping before my blog turns 1 🙂
Since you pretty much covered all my pet peeves I’ll say I love when blogs have pages that have all the links to they blogging tips posts!!! I definitely read those tips all the time!

  15. I know what you mean! I hate it whens bloggers apologize for not posting. Honestly, I read so many blogs I had no idea. Plus, you need to actually go DO things to have something to blog about! Happy to see I had your “must haves” on my blog. 🙂

  17. Interesting, there’s def somethings I’ve never thought of.

My pet peeve is when a blog’s “about me” section is too vague. I feel like I can’t relate if I don’t know: where they live, what they do, etc, and I don’t want to have to read through a bunch of posts to guess.

  18. #4 drives me crazy!!! Now that you mention the pinterest plugin, I’ll be sure to add it LOL. I did try once, but for some reason or another it wasn’t working… or perhaps it was just me & not being good w/ technology?

  19. This was a great post, Katie. This week I’m on Spring Break. We are pretty busy, but maybe I’ll have time to do some updating over at my blog. Per your suggestions I think I just added a couple of new things to my blog. Honestly, I am not certain it worked… but I’m giving it a try. Maybe I need to sit with two browsers open so I can see things from my end and also from the reader’s side of things. Does that make sense? recently posted..Happy Birthday, Mom!My Profile

Also, I will email a blend and have them check it out and see if the change worked. That’s how I figured out my comment reply plugin!

  20. I love this post! And hopefully my blog meets those requirements? 😉
I used to feel so much guilt for missing any day’s post, and I would totally say “I’m sorry blah blah blah” but I now realize how silly that is. I no longer say that, AND it bothers me when other people do haha. It’s perfectly fine (if not awesome) to be busy with life away from the computer!

  21. Yikes! I hope you still read my blog! I don’t pay each month for a self-hosted, so I don’t think I can get the ‘pin it’ below my pics. I have the ‘pin it’ link on my bookmarks so I can click that if I see something on a blog I want to pin that doesn’t have the plug in.

  22. Realized I do just about 95% of these things. WOOPS!! Haha Love you and hope you still hop over to TTT now and again 🙂
