So, as you all know, I am a Les Mills BODYPUMP instructor and I teach a few times a week at different fitness clubs in Eau Claire. . . . and now, I’m back to teaching at the YMCA in Mankato!
Every quarter, Les Mills puts together new moves and music for the latest release.I think that it almost always takes me a few times of doing a new release before I really love it. Now, there is usually a song or two that just aren’t my favorite for whatever reason. . . but overall, I really have enjoyed all the releases so far.
I took my training on BODYPUMP 84.
Since then, I have learned the releases since then – 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94 and now 95. (Other reviews here) I also have learned 64, 80, 82 and 83, since some other instructors at the YMCA had those training DVDs.
So, after teaching it for a few weeks, here are my thoughts on the very latest release. . .
#1: Warm up – “Outside
Good warm up song. Nice mix of the standard moves to get the body ready for the workout. I always like the addition of plates at the end to warm up the shoulders too. And I love when they put power presses in the warm up – great full body move to get the body going.
#2: Squats – “Bukem”
I’ll be honest. It’s not my favorite. I just can’t get into the song. What ever happened to squat tracks with lyrics??? That being said, I actually really LOVE the workout of this track. 5 minutes in wide stance with NO breaks. That is AWESOME!
#3: Chest – “Uptown Funk”
I was super nervous about this one because when I first got the music and saw this song listed, I was already over it. It was so overplayed this summer on the radio! But, the same craziness that always happens with BP music, happened again. . . I love this song again. And I think this is a super fun track! And a nice mix of working the chest from all different aspects using the chest press, A press and pushups. I think that bottom half fast pulses are awesome for fatiguing the pecs and this song does not disappoint.
#4: Back – “Beautiful World”
There is something magical that happens with this song and the first few sets of clean and presses. You have to do the release to know what I am taking about, but I like to cue the first set and then be quiet and let the song speak for itself. I also like the addition of 2 quick sets of front squats and presses. And I like adding weights with each set – makes it progressively harder and that last set is killer!
#5: Triceps – “Irresistible”
Decent song. I like the tricep dip bottom half pulses. They burn so good! Nice mix of work without the bar – overhead extension, tricep dip, and kickback row.
#6: Biceps – “GDFR”
While this song is super repetitive – I still like it. All the mid-range pulses really target the guns and the plate row is fun with the lyrics (POP it!) and a good active recovery.
#7: Lunges – “Burnin”
So, when I first listened to this song, I hated it. I was upset that there was another techno song with basically no words. My husband makes fun of this song and says it sounds like I am rocking out in a Swedish nightclub. And while that’s true, this actually ends up being one of my favorite songs of the release. The pulse beats will get stuck in your head. And 7 pulses are no joke. Good challenge for the legs!
#8: Shoulders – “I Am Machine”
At first, I was sad that there were no pushups in this track, but OMG, all of those upright rows kill it. Good mix of using the bar + plates. Total shoulder burn.
#9: Core – “Sugar”
I just really like this song. And I think this is a good core track. The past two releases, I have been asking for some plank work and this release finally delivers! I think the rotating hover is a good core challenge. And pulse crunches are always a winner in my book.
#10: Cool down – “Brother”
This song is just meh for me. Overall, it’s a good stretch after a killer release!
Overall, I thought this was a really strong release. Lots of quick transitions with minimal breaks and making every rep count.
But, I am already excited about seeing what’s in store for BP96!
Have you done BP95??? What did you think?
Linking up with Becky for Treat Yourself Tuesday – because if you’ve ever done bodypump, you know it is an amazing treat for your body.
