Caprese Salad

I have a super easy appetizer/snack/lunch/side dish for you. It is my version of the caprese salad. Typical caprese salads have tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and seasoned with salt and olive oil.

My version has fresh slices of mozzarella cheese (did you know they sell pre-sliced fresh mozzarella at Sam’s Club?), alternated with similar slices of tomatoes, and drizzled with really good, thick balsamic vinegar. I love this stuff from Williams Sonoma.

Oh it is so good!

If you have fresh basil leaves on hand, you can also alternate that with the tomatoes and mozzarella.

Super easy and delicious.

I took this to a couple Holiday parties this year and it went over really well.

  1. Ooo, caprese salad is one of my favourites and what we have chosen for the starter on our wedding day. I’ve never even thought about having it with balsamic vinegar though. Another of my faves!

  2. I could eat caprese salad every day and not get sick of it. I love it in the summer when I have own fresh basil and tomatoes!

Me too!! And summer is for sure the best when it is fresh out of your garden! Since it is currently -6. . . I can’t wait for summer!

  3. I love caprese salad. I love anything with balsamic on it or in it! I love reducing it to make it thick!

  5. That’s one of my favorites! We even have that same fresh mozzeralla (from Sam’s) in the fridge. And I have leftover balsamic reduction from the other night. Unfortunately I’m not sure I can brave the cold to get a tomato or two. This is Florida! It’s not supposed to be 40 degrees! I don’t even know what to wear 🙂 Looks like I’m just going to sit here and stare at yours (it’s pretty!).

  6. I usually do balsamic AND oil. haha 🙂 I also reduce the balsamic to make it a little more manageable. I’ve done caprese on toothpicks before for a party app and it was crazy time-consuming, but looked impressive at the end! And everybody loooves it.

This reminds me so much of summer…now I miss it even more!! 🙂

  7. Oh this looks so delicious! I use to eat a lot of this when we still ate cheese.

  8. That looks delicious…and I’m not even a cheese fan. But I love all the freshness. I hate this time of year because all the fresh fruits and veggies are difficult to come by without paying an arm and a leg. Thanks for sharing!

I totally agree – can’t wait for summer. . .which has nothing to do with the fact that it is 5 degrees out right now. 😉

  9. Caprese “salads” are my fav! I still think it’s funny it is called a salad 😉 Kyle might kill me if I left out the basil though so normally (instead of layering), I just sprinkle some cut up leaves on top before drizzling with balsamic!

You are right, it is totally crazy that it is called a salad. . .does that make it the same as jello salad? 😉
