5 Cross Fit Truths

Whether you’ve been doing cross fit for a while, are still new or thinking about trying it out. .. here are a few tips to help you out and what I wish I would have known before my first class. . . and what I keep in mind every time I go for a workout. Smile

1. you won’t know what the gibberish on the board means for a while. . .

after a few months, there are still things that I’ve never seen before or don’t know the abbreviations. Thankfully everyone, like seriously everyone, at the box are so nice and will tell you what it means if you just ask. PS – don’t be afraid to ask anything at anytime to your fellow cross fitters or to the coaches. Cross Fit is amazing for the team atmosphere, so even though every movement (unless you are doing a partner workout) is very individualized, there is the support and help from the group.

2. you will destroy your hands no matter how much chalk you use. Ahhh it seems so nice and easy, right? Just put a little chalk on your hands and it will all be ok. Nope. Not true. Not even a little bit. Now, I haven’t (knock on wood) torn open my hands but I am sporting some pretty nice calluses. And they didn’t get there easily or just overnight. It took really the past two months to slowly (and sometimes painfully) build them up. Remember to use the chalk though. .. even though it doesn’t magically heal your hands, it does help. A lot. And you look pretty B.A. leaving the gym with chalk handprints all over your pants, am I right? Winking smile

3. No matter what the WOD, you will feel like you are going to die at some point during it. Oh man, before starting CF, I didn’t believe there was any way you could get in a good workout if the WOD was only AMRAP 8 minutes (as many reps as possible in 8 minutes). But I am here to tell you that not only is it 100% possible to get a good butt kicking in those 8 minutes, at the end of those 8 minutes, all you want to do is lay on the floor and thank goodness that it wasn’t AMRAP 9 minutes.

4. There will be some moves that you L.O.V.E. and some that you H.A.T.E. For me – I love pull ups, box jumps, and cleans. I loathe snatch, running (ironic, I know – but I don’t like 200/400 sprints. . . give me 5 miles any day over those distances), and turkish get ups . .. my left side just doesn’t like to do them. 5. you are going to love it Smile Pure and simple. Cross Fit is awesome. It is challenging. And fun. And different.

Cross Fit tips for starting out

I’ve been doing Cross Fit for a few months now. Spoiler alert, I am still loving it! But it was probably the most overwhelming new fitness experience I have ever done – more than even getting my BODYPUMP certification. . . so, I thought I would share a few tips for anyone who is thinking about trying it, just starting out, or even if you’ve been cross fitting for a while, some good reminders too. 1. try it. you never know what you can do until you give it a try.  Bear crawl, box jumps, the snatch. All things I thought, yup, no way can I do that! But you know what. I can! And one of the reasons I love cross fit so much is that no matter what level of fitness you are, there is a modification/challenge for you.

2. listen to your coach and their cues. the coaches aren’t trying to bust your balls. they are truly trying to help you be safe and successful. So, use them. Ask questions. If something doesn’t feel right, ask, or better yet, have them watch your form. the coaches I have run into at my cross fit box are probably some of the best trainers and coaches I have ever had.

3. don’t add weight. yet. at my box, the coaches are always saying – you have to earn the weight. and that is SO true. Don’t feel like you have to RX a workout EVER. Take your time to learn the skills and master them before adding weight.

4. go to different classes/types/times/coaches. I’ve found that each class during the day has a little different vibe to it. I tend to fit in the best with the 6am class, so I try to make it to that one as often as I can. Now, the other classes are all good, but if you find the class where you click with the other cross fitters and the coach, it can be pretty amazing.

5. show up early/stay after. there will be lots of skills for you to work on and learn and while class will help you with those, the best time to practice is on your own. I tend to show up about 20 minutes before class. I spend the first 10 minutes warming up and then the next 10 minutes working on a new skill. Lately, my goal has been to master double unders. They are getting better, but it’s still a work in progress. . . and I’ll keep working at them! And after that, it’s on to pull ups and handstands!!

Treat Yourself Tuesday–33rd birthday!

Last Tuesday was my 33rd birthday. Or as I tell Luke, I am two 3s. Because he is one 3. . . two 3s sounds way better to me than 33, so I’m just going to go with it!

My birthday started a few days early with a cupcake treat from Laura.

Overall, it was a great birthday. I am so thankful and looking forward to the next year!

Weekend Update: 5/31/15

Woooooo Monday.

Ummm nope.

Is it just me, or did this weekend fly by? Like way shorter than usual?

Oh well. .. at least it was a really good one!

Kicked off the weekend with a killer partner WOD at Cross Fit.

And the rest of Sunday was spent helping my sister hit the ground running with AdvoCare (SO excited to start a challenge with her next week!!), family dinner, and enjoying the nice weather outside.

Happiness is the sound of Scott and Luke reading books together – especially Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. So adorable.

Early bedtime = weekend perfection. Smile

Friday Favorites: 5/8/15

oh Friday. Finally!

I am so looking forward to this weekend. Planning on hitting up a cross fit class – Saturday mornings are usually partner workouts and are pretty fun! Thinking about checking out the local farmer’s market, doing a few family runs, and enjoying the nice weather. And, of course, Mother’s Day on Sunday that hopefully will include a visit to the hospital to see Dad.

Here are the things that made me smile this week.

Laura made nachos for dinner on Monday night. They were awesome. And it is so nice to be close to my sisters, especially right now.

After seeing these around the blogosphere, I finally got to try them for myself! The company was nice enough to send me a few coupons for me to pick up 2 boxes. Salted caramel and cookie dough ftw. These fro yo bars are the perfect post-dinner snack. A little sweetness to end the evening. and only 100 calories. Winning.

Good news. We heard this week that my Dad’s sister is a PEFFECT bone marrow match for Dad. So happy. . .

He just L.O.V.E.S the little carts at the grocery store. And is so adorable with putting items in his cart and picking out things that we “have” to buy.

Le Tote. Have you guys heard of this? Basically for $49 per month, you have a personal shopper sending you items from your “closet”. Friday Favorites: 4/17/15

Man, Friday already? Why do weeks on vacation go by so much faster than regular weeks? Scott and I both took this week off of work to hang out and spend some extra time with Luke around his birthday – 3 years old yesterday!!

BODYPUMP 93. Launch last weekend was amazing. And I am really loving this release. Triceps are my fav and lunges and shoulders are killer!

New cross fit shoes! My running shoes just weren’t cutting it for wall walking. I tried the Nano 4.0 that everyone loves. . . but it wasn’t for me – the Nano 2.0 are awesome. And even though I am a total pink girl – I love the purple/yellow combo.

Weekend Update: 3/29/15

The last Monday of March? How did that happen? Craziness.

Kicked off the weekend with a walk and play time at the park.

Cross Fit Newbie Thoughts

Oh my goodness. 

I really had no idea what I was getting myself into when I signed up for Cross Fit Essentials a few weeks ago. . . 

While I liked the Essentials class and understand that it is 100% necessary to go through before jumping into workouts, it wasn’t my fav. The pace was slow to go over the movements, which looking back, was really good to have those building blocks in place, but I just wanted to get in to the workouts! And now. . .

I am loving (like seriously loving!) workouts. The best part of my day. I’m smiling even when I am on minute 17 of whatever WOD craziness we are doing. 

I can’t even remember the last time I’ve had such a killer workout. And the workouts every day are killer. Even when they look super easy. Ummm no. Killer. every. time.

I was super nervous going in about being able to do everything and not look like a total idiot. I mean, I figured I would be ok – I work out, I’m pretty strong and fit, but handstand pushups, pull-ups, something about kipping craziness, olympic lifts, all things I have read about on other blogs, that had me second guessing myself. . . but that is probably the best part of cross fit. Everything, like seriously, every. single. thing. can be modified and scaled to whatever fitness level you are at. . .  and with the challenge to go to the next level when you are ready. So, the person who hasn’t worked out for the past year, me and the guy that’s been doing CF for the last 2 year and has biceps like whoa, we all can do the workout together and each get a killer workout. Amazing.

The other thing that has been repeated a few times, you don’t just get weight, you EARN it. Which as a fellow fitness instructor, I love that. Form and function before adding weight.

And if you are local, I cannot say enough amazing and awesome things about the team at FitELITE. They are wonderful. Super welcoming, helpful and just plain nice.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love me some BODYPUMP and running. But this is different. And different is good. 

I also think it was one of the best decisions I made to jump right into something new the week of moving to Wisconsin. It immediately gave me a new group of people to get to know and make a connection, which is something that can be challenging in a new town. 

But don’t worry, this isn’t going to turn into a cross fit blog. But if you are thinking about trying cross fit, do it. It is worth the money. Seriously. I don’t say that lightly, because it’s a good chunk of change, but really it’s that good. And fun. And muscles on fire. And challenging. And you’re welcome.

Friday Favorites: 3/13/15

Woo hoo for Friday. Am I right? 

The nicer weather made it a little more difficult to get through the week and be stuck inside during the day. . . but thankfully it is hanging around and I cannot wait to spend some time outside. We are doing a Pi run on Saturday – 3/14 and running 3.14 and getting a piece of pie afterwards #winning

Other than that, no real plans. . . totally going to make Scott grill every day – thinking brats and hamburgers. After a long, cold winter, I am SO excited about the extra daylight in the evenings and the warmer weather!!

Weekend Update: 3/8/15

Oh man, this Monday after daylight savings time is tough. . . It’s a coffee + spark day. Winking smile 

Friday night, I dragged Luke and Scott to FitELITE to check out Friday Night Lights – the cross fit open workout for the week. There were lot of people competing and watching.

On Saturday morning, I hit up Cross Fit for my first partner workout = awesomesauce. I’ll touch on it more in my post coming up about Cross Fit but I love how every workout can be scaled to your ability, so no matter who you are paired with for the partner workout, you both get an awesome killer workout.
