So, as you guys all know, I do a lot of running.

But not too many races. I have done 2 marathons and I think 7 half marathons as well as a few 5Ks. My main reason for running is because I love it, it makes me feel good, keeps me in shape, and lets me eat more cupcakes! Winking smile 

But, I do like to do races too. I like the challenge and focus of training for something. A reason to increase my weekly long runs. And get a cool medal and t-shirt!


I have been trying to figure out my next race. And I thought I had. . . the Des Moines Half Marathon in October. I ran it last year with Scott. And totally died the last 2 miles. So a chance for redemption at the race, and also, a chance to head back to Des Moines –> one of my favorite towns and my old medical school stomping grounds. Good plan, right?

Well, then Becky, posted about signing up for her 1st full marathon this winter. And she posted Hal Higdon’s novice marathon training schedule.

Which, I looked at.

And realized that I could totally do it.

And there are exactly 18 weeks between now and the Des Moines marathon.

Gulp. Ummm I have always known I wanted to run another marathon. My 1st one was awesome, my 2nd one was not. 3rd times the charm, right? But I am not sure if now is the time. I am not sure when the β€œright” time is. . .

So, I am struggling with which distance to do. . . I know I can do them both. The marathon will be harder, by a lot. And I know I am up to the challenge, but do I want/need that extra challenge in my life right now???

  2. Ummm 1. You’ve done a bajillion races! I have done 1 half and maybe 3 5k’s – compared to me you’re a racin’ queen! And 2. I think you should come to Cali and run the half to my marathon.   3. Oh tough choice. I have only done 2 marathons also and I am on the fence about doing a third. I would have to say depends on how much time you truely want to devote. Marathon training is soooo tough.

  4. I impulsively signed up for a marathon (Twin Cities!) this year, so I’d say do it! πŸ™‚ This will be my 7th, so I’m not new to the game but I swear, it never seems to get easier. I think that’s why I love it so much!

  8. Oh man, I know how tough that decision is! I decided against going for a full marathon this fall because I didn’t think I could make the time commitment work for our family. I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t pursue another full marathon until I’m done having kids and they’re all sleeping through the night. πŸ™‚ I’m hoping that having more independent kids, someday, will help me deal with my mom guilt better.

    It’s nice that you’ve been through marathon training, so you know what you’re signing up for. You’re the only one who knows what’s in your heart. If it’ll make you happy and your family’s on board, then I say go for it! πŸ™‚ Good luck with your decision!

      Oh Kim – such good advice and I apperciate your thoughts because I know you are in a similar situation. And so true that I have to go with what my gut (and heart!) tell me. It is nice to know that I will have the support of my husband and Luke no matter what I do. πŸ™‚

  12. This is so corny – pretend you’ve made your choice to do the full or the half. Sit with how you feel about it for a day or two. If you totally regret it or are relieved, you know which one to choose!
