Not everything goes perfectly over here. . . I think we all try to put our best foot forward and post happy times, good pictures, etc. . . but this is real life here on Running4Cupcakes! And just so you can have a laugh, or avoid mistakes I have made, or learn from them – I thought I would share my recent #fails.

Fail #1
Remember when I made that super yummy fruit quinoa salad?

Well, the recipe uses lime juice. And I had 2 super hard limes. But, I had remembered a tip I had learned to just put the lime in the microwave for a few seconds and it helps to get the juice flowing. Hmmm, sounds easy enough right. And it probably should have been. . . I did the first lime for about 15 seconds and it worked, a little, but still wasn’t ah-mazing. . . so I put the 2nd one in the microwave for longer (maybe 30 seconds – or more, I was trying to put this recipe together while feeding a baby breakfast and getting ready to go to Easter church). And the longer cooking time would have been fine, if, I would have let the lime sit for a little bit. . . but unfortunately, I cut right into that lime! The juice, which was now under pressure from being heated in the microwave went everywhere! The cabinets, the counter, my hair. .. and instead of helping me clean up – my husband, took pictures. Fail #2

The idea sounded good. Put a pork loin in the crockpot, cover with root beer and cook until meat is falling apart. Scott loves Barq’s root beer, so I thought this would be right up his alley. It cooked, but the taste was just off. A little too sweet and not a good flavor. Now, in the recipes defense, it totally could have been the type of root beer we used . . . but I am not trying it again! #crockpotfail

Our latest foot/handprint craft with Luke. The inspiration was caterpillar . . . from pinterest. And it just didn’t work. I think we didn’t put the handprints close enough together.  .. It’s still cute, but it doesn’t look like a caterpillar – maybe another insect or Scott thinks a Chinese dragon. #handprintfail

Fail #4
So, this one isn’t a total fail, but hear me out. . . we got a few audiobooks for our long road trip out to WY in March. One of them, which I had heard good things about, was The Kite Runner. Long story short, am I glad I listed to it? Yes*

**If I would have been reading the book, I would have never made it through the whole thing. I hardly ever stop a book once I start, and I know I would have stopped this one. The book starts out very slow with no apparent story line and the main character just keeps getting worse. A couple times I turned to Scott and said, really? is he really doing this? I kept waiting for the main character to do something right. . .  We had nothing else better to listen to on our 18 hours back to MN, so we listened to the whole thing. The story picks up towards the end and ends up being decent, but it was really hard for me (and Scott) to get through the first part of the book. My friend, Kourtney, told me there is a Kite Runner movie, which is (in her opinion) better because the story line goes faster. I’m on the fence if I am going to watch it. . . #bookfail

Have you had any #fails lately?? Please tell me I am not the only one!!

  1. Awww, I think the handprint artwork is cute! I’ve got a recent mothering fail for you. Got my 1 y/o up and changed her diaper in the dark. Thought she smelled a little stinky, but her diaper just seemed really saturated. Took her into our bed to nurse her, and kept getting a whiff of something unpleasant. Went back into her room to get her dressed for the day, looked down, and there was a big piece of poop on the floor! Must have fallen out when I changed her the first time. Oops! Guess that eliminates me from mother of the year award!

  3. Oh my goodness, yes to The Kite Runner. I wanted to slap the main character! And lol I like the caterpillar… I could tell what it was! 🙂

I have so many fails, it’s tragic. Like applying self tanner and then noticing a ridiculous amount of streaks the next day at work. Sigh.

So glad to hear I am not the only one with The Kite Runner – I just kept shaking my head at the main character!!

  4. Hahahhaha!! I’ve been waiting for this post ever since you mentioned it at our meet up! I’m lovin’ the lime photos 😉 I swear that I always fail at cookies. They’re either perfect or running and flat- I have no idea what I’m doing differently each time!

  5. um yes, failures are inevitable in our house too.
our garage is pretty tight with 6 adult bikes (my husband is a bike guy) and numerous strollers and kid bikes/things so when you add 2 cars and a door that swings INTO the garage you’re bound to hit the car with the door. matt had installed a piece of wood on the ceiling to block the door from hitting the cars but i didn’t pull the car in far enough today and sure enough little emmett opened the door this evening and CRACK went the tail light! ugh it was not a pretty sound:(

  6. I read this before bed last night and literally laughed out loud. I love that you posted your fails—it shows the world you are real. We all have fails but some people aren’t brave enough to share. Let’s see, I’ve had many-a-food-fail in my day and a lot of the time (since I hate wasting food) I’ll end up making it into something completely different. I’m lucky to have a husband who is not at all picky!
    Happy day my friend! xoxo!

  7. Yes! I just recently posted about a recipe that I tried making from a magazine for tofu ramen soup with spinach. It was decent, but far from great! Those things happen! 🙁

  8. We did the rootbeer trick too! The difference was that we drained and shredded the meat when it was done, then mixed bbq sauce in and it was AMAZING!

Hmm I might have to give it another go – we didn’t drain the meat, maybe that’s the difference?

  9. You are not the only one with fails! I remember when I tried to make black bean burgers from The Best Life Diet book. My family ~ all of them ~ were mortified with how they tasted/their texture. It is a night we still talk about!
It is nice to hear that there are differing opinions about things… I absolutely LOVED the Kite Runner. I guess that’s why there are so many books out there, right?!
The caterpillar is cute! It’s not supposed to look like a Pinterest caterpillar. That’s not real life!! 🙂

Real life is key and makes for good laughs! I agree. And I love how a book can read so differently to different people – I am glad you enjoyed it!!
