Grocery Challenge: Month 3: Week 1-2

Missed my last update? Check it out here!

I think the longer we keep up with the challenge, the easier it is becoming. It is just standard to check the fridge, pantry and freezer and meal plan before going to the grocery store. I am much more thoughtful about my purchases with regard to what we are planning on eating that week. While it is becoming easier, it is still a challenge! We made 2 trips this weekend, Sam’s Club and Cub Foods.

Typical haul at Sam’s Club: fruit (raspberries and strawberries), frozen fruit (for smoothies), eggs and milk. Total spent: $29.45

Cub Foods. Mostly staples and stocking up on sale items. Total spent: $50.05

-–> Scott went by himself, forgot to use cash, but was super proud of the fact that he saved 28%. Smile

And now we have $142.30 left for the rest of July. About right for being halfway through the month.

We are headed up to the Lake for a week at the end of July to hang out with some friends, so I am a little nervous about extra spending that might happen around that time. I am already trying to meal plan and dessert plan ahead of time, so I can be prepared and stay within budget. I am already planning on making Special K bars thanks to Melanie for putting the thought in my head. Winking smile

As always, any suggestions for saving money is appreciated!! And have you ever had Special K bars?? I think I will have to do a post on them to share their awesome-ness with the blog world. Winking smile

  1. You are rockin’ this challenge! I was so excited to save BIG time on blueberries this weekend. They just came into season here, and we went to a local patch. Would you believe we only paid $10 for two GALLONS of blueberries?! The girls probably consumed another gallon straight off the bushes, so we made out like bandits, although my youngest diapers were a little crazy. She’s cut off from berries for a few days!!

  3. The Special K bars sound really good 🙂 When you do the review please include the recipe! As usual, your ability to restrain yourself is amazing. Do you spend as much time on your budgeting/planning as you did at the beginning? recently posted..Macarizing on Monday! My Profile

Of course I will include a recipe!! I have to share the deliciousness. 🙂 And I think I probably spend a little less time with planning than I did at the begining but it still takes a little bit of time ahead of going to the store to think about it.

  4. Wow, you’re doing awesome with this!! I really need to start paying for things with cash. I know it would be a huge learning experience.

It has been way more of a learning experience than I thought it would be. Also, check at your local store to see if they have any kids programs. At one store in town, if I have Luke with me, he can get a free banana! Every little bit helps. 😉

  5. I’m seriously impressed with you challenge!! I agree, the longer you do it the easier it gets in regards to meal planning/prepping, but I think I need to be more mindful with spending. Perhaps I’ll take a stab this week! 🙂

Thanks so much!! I am pretty impressed too. I am so happy that I did it and have seen improvements in our spending overall. It really helps to use cash at the store because then you really have to pay attention to prices and how much you are buying!! Good luck and let me know how it goes. 🙂

  6. Whoa! I just got caught up on the grocery challenge of yours and I am SO impressed!! We spend like $600 easily on groceries every month for the two of us.

Do you plan on doing a post about what some of your meals have been each week?

Thanks so much! I have been really impressed and thrilled that it is going so well. I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner. We really haven’t been eating too many exciting things to share, lots of stuff that was just hiding away in the freezer. After we empty the freezer, I will have to do a post about cheap meal ideas that I use frequently!
