International Chocolate Day –Balance Bar Giveaway

Happy International Chocolate Day!

Full disclosure. . . I had no idea today was International Chocolate Day. Winking smile

Thankfully, Balance Bar keeps me in the loop.

And offered to help me choose a healthier option to celebrate the day with the protein-packed Chocolate Mint Cookie Crunch Balance Bars.

I mean, you guys know how much I love Balance Bars. . . My favorite way to eat them is for a quick breakfast on the go. I know I am getting a good dose of protein and their 40/30/30 formula (40% of total calories from carbs, 30% from quality protein and 30% from dietary fat) makes it a good way to start the day – PLUS getting to eat chocolate for breakfast. Win. Win. Smile

To be 100% honest, if I am going to celebrate today, I will probably do it with my favorite way to eat chocolate – either in cupcake, ice cream or cookie form. Winking smile

Balance Bar has offered to send one box of Chocolate Mint Cookie Crunch bars to a lucky R4C reader.

Awesome, right?

The Balance Project–Summer Shape Up {+giveaway}

Hey guys, I am back today with my 2nd post from the Balance Project. Not sure what I am talking about? Check out my first post here.

Memorial Day weekend is always the start of summer for me – looking forward to weekends at the Lake, grilling out and sunshine runs!

Today, I am sharing tips from The Balance Project guide, Gabby Reece, about how to be successful with balance during the summer months.

unnamed

Make it your own: There is not one right way to get it done. There is the right way that works for you. When it comes to eating healthy, find the foods you like and implement those into your daily diet. The same goes for exercise. If you hate the gym then find something outside that is manageable for you. This is not about torture; this is about creating a lifestyle that you can do week after week.

Watch the calendar: Use summer for motivation to shape up but don’t wait for June 21st. If you wait until summer actually starts, you’ll feel rushed and end up crash dieting or doing a crazy workout schedule. I personally like to keep a calendar in my kitchen and cross off the days as I countdown to bikini weather. The visual reminder – right where you eat – is helpful in keeping you on track.

Sign up a friend: We tend to be more successful at accomplishing some type of exercise if we have an accountability partner. Solicit a friend and maybe use this as your time to connect. You can train for a 5k together or join an outdoor boot camp; there are a lot more options now that the weather is improving.

Plan to snack: Take snacks (like fruit, nuts or a Balance Bar®) wherever you go to prevent mindless eating. If I have an afternoon or early evening workout planned, I make sure to have one of these handy an hour or so before so that I have plenty of energy to get in a good workout.

Variety is key: Make as many meals as you can at home so you can control your nutrition. These are some of my favorite recipes,– fresh and full of veggies for springtime! To keep things interesting and fresh at my house, I try to rotate foods. One night I may go for something heavier with veggies and grains, and then the next night focus on proteins. I really try to change up the food and create a great deal of variety.

Each day is a new chance and it’s never too late: If you fall out of your summer shape up routine one day, don’t sweat it. Forgive yourself and move on – and just keep moving!

Jennie-O Taco Seasoned Ground Turkey–{recipe + giveaway}

In honor of Cinco de Mayo and as part of the Jennie-O Switch Circle team, Jennie-O was amazing and sent this awesome package to help celebrate.

IMG_0384

We had just had tacos for Luke’s birthday party that weekend, so I put the turkey taco meat into the freezer for a later time.

And I am so glad I pulled it out this weekend.

IMG_0908

We were in the cities all day on Sunday and by the time we got home, I just wanted something quick and easy and healthy for dinner.

Enter Jennie-O taco turkey meat + salsa verde + wholly guacamole = yum.

IMG_0909

I served everything over lettuce. And Scott and I made build your own taco salads.

IMG_0910

On mine: lettuce, taco turkey meat, salsa verde, wholly guacamole, and a sprinkle of cheese. (+ for being Advocare friendly!)

IMG_0913

On Scott’s: the same + more cheese, sour cream, taco sauce and crushed up tortilla chips.

IMG_0911

The Jennie-O turkey meat was flavorful and delicious. And the fact that the meat was already taco-seasoned, just one less step between me and dinner. I loved how quickly this entire meal came together! I will definitely be picking up Jennie-O taco seasoned ground turkey again for a quick, easy, healthy dinner!

We even ate leftovers the next night – this time in taco form.

Mine with corn tortillas, guacamole and salsa verde.

IMG_0918

Scott’s with flour tortilla, sour cream, cheese, and taco sauce.

IMG_0919

YUM.

And then I ate it again for lunch at work the next day. 3 days in a row! Seriously, can’t get enough. So good. Smile

AND. . .

I have a giveaway from Jennie-O!

–> one lucky R4C reader will receive $20 worth of Jennie-O coupons, which can be used to purchase any Jennie-O products

Awesome, right?

My new favorite gym bag {Apera review + giveaway – closed}

So you guys remember my Friday Favorites from a few weeks ago where I showed you this super cute new bag that I got? Well, that happens to be the tote sling Apera bag in the best color ever – pink!

IMG_9075IMG_9117

They were nice enough to send me one to check out and review for the blog. I have been on the look out for for-ever for a new gym bag. My old one, that I have been using for 10+ years, was in dire need of an upgrade. And when I saw this bag, I knew that would be perfect.

IMG_9076IMG_9079

I had a few criteria.

#1. Not too big. It’s a fine line for a gym bag – you need it to be big enough for all your stuff, but you don’t want it to be too big so that you are lugging around a bag big enough that your workout begins before you even get to class, right? This bag is perfect. It is big enough for 1-2 pairs of shoes, my water bottle, music, towel, and a bunch of little things that are needed (batteries, chapstick, pens, hair binders, etc.)
#2. Lots of pockets. #necessary
#3. Pink! I know, I am so predictable, but it just makes me happy.
#4. Place for my shoes. –> now that I am a spin instructor, I often have tennis shoes + cycling shoes. So I need a dedicated space that  I can put my sweaty shoes.

IMG_9078
#5. Water bottle holder – a few weeks before I got this bag, I had a water bottle “incident” because my old bag had no specific place for one.
#6. Cross-body style – sometimes Luke comes with me to play while I am teaching and carrying him in and out of the YMCA is a two hand job. So, I am a huge fan of bags that can be worn cross-body style.

The bag arrived on a Wednesday night and I didn’t waste anytime. That baby came to the YMCA with me that night to teach BODYPUMP.

IMG_9067

And it is now my designated gym bag.

It has a few awesome additions that make it the perfect bag:

All Apera Bags have:

** antimicobiral product protection to help prevent the growth of bacterial odors on the bag
** vented compartments
** wipeable lining
** washable inset

I am even thinking I will have to get one for our next diaper bag!

Also, I loved it so much and it was the perfect size, that I emptied it out and made it my carry-on bag for our trip to Maui.

#tooearly #needcoffee

IMG_9114

It worked really well. The shoe pockets held an extra water bottle and fruit. There was more than enough space for my laptop, magazines, book and snacks. And all the extra pockets came in handy for the little things that need to come along when you travel – and of course, to hold my chapstick. My only complaint about it was that I loaded it up pretty good, so after hauling it around the airport for an hour waiting for our flight, my shoulder was a little sore. . .but that was probably my own fault given how much stuff I had brought along. #girlproblems And that’s what husbands are for. . . #amiright

IMG_9130

Scott was carrying it through the airport security line and the lady behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said “tell your husband I really like his pink bag.” Winking smile

AND I have a giveaway for R4C readers too!! Awesome, right?

Apera bags is giving one lucky R4C reader an Apera Bags sprint pack.

Cub Foods Bloomin’ Garlic Cheese Bread + {giveaway}

So, I have professed my love for Cub Foods before, right?

IMG_4618

It is the main grocery store that I do my shopping at and it helps that they send awesome coupons in the mail.
IMG_4099
I don’t think I would have conquered my grocery challenge, if I didn’t shop at Cub Foods.
I don’t think I have ever talked about how awesome their store brand – Essential Everyday – is. ..  I tend to buy the store brand when I can, because it is usually quite a bit cheaper. I was shopping at Cub on Saturday and bought oats (to make some chia peanut butter power bars) and Essential Everyday oats were $1 cheaper than the other brands.  I don’t know about you, but that is a BIG deal for my grocery budget.
And so, when Cub Foods contacted me to do a recipe review for Superbowl Sunday and host a giveaway. .. I couldn’t respond fast enough.
And you guys, this recipe is awesome. And easy. And delicious. And cheesy.

IMG_8962

So awesome, in fact, that I took it to a Super bowl party AND made it again the next night to go with leftover chili.

IMG_8964

Now, there is nothing too healthy about this recipe –> but it’s all about moderation. . . yup, I know, moderation does not mean eat 2 days in a row. .. but at the Super bowl party, I had to share. Winking smile

IMG_8966

One more fun fact about Cub Foods, kids get a free cookie. . . it’s a win-win. . . a cookie buys me about 1/2 the store of shopping silence and makes the grocery store a much more enjoyable experience for both of us!

IMG_8939IMG_8940

Cub Foods Bloomin’ Garlic Cheese Bread

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 (16 ounce) unsliced loaf sourdough bread (I used Rosemary and Olive Oil bread)
  • 1/2 cup Essential Everyday Butter , melted
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 (8 ounce) package Essential Everyday Fancy Shredded Cheddar Melt Blend Cheese
DIRECTIONS
  • Cut loaf of bread lengthwise and then widthwise without cutting through to the bottom crust, creating 1-inch squares. Place bread on a foil-lined baking sheet.
  • In small bowl, combine melted butter, parsley and garlic; salt and pepper to taste. Generously brush butter mixture all over inside and outside of bread. Insert cheese between cuts in bread.
  • Cover with foil and bake in a preheated 350°F oven 15 minutes. Remove foil; continue baking 10-15 minutes or until cheese is melted and golden brown.

Chick’d! {+giveaway!}

Have you guys heard of Chick’d?

It is the awesome new workout clothing company from Canada run by 2 women who know the importance of using environmentally sustainable fabrics.

I had the opportunity to check out the Reprieve tank from the Chick’d product line.

001002005015

I wore it to teach a BODYPUMP class and it rocked. It stayed put the entire time, I didn’t have to adjust it once! I love the purple color – cute and bright. And the length- hits right at the hip. I know this will be one of my go-to workout top staples.

The kind ladies at Chick’d are allowing me to give away 1 pair of medium size Cadence capris to a lucky Running4Cupcakes reader.

020021023024

The Cadence Capri has a flattering and supportive design – with stitching everywhere you need it! It also has a high, wide waistband to cover everything! It has the Chick’d four-way stretch and super nice luxurious fabric. It also has one of my favorite things – a pocket!!

Noodles (giveaway)

Have you been to Noodle and Company?

Then you know how delicious it is? right?

We totally had Noodles take-out this weekend. . .

023024

It was delicious, as usual! I got my normal Japanese pan noodles with shrimp and extra broccoli substituted for the mushrooms. The thick udon noodles are my fav!

026

Scott’s not a huge fan of carbs in general (pasta, rice, potatoes), so he doesn’t usually like Noodles but I convinced him to try something new. . . and he got the penne rosa with parmesan chicken and oh goodness, that was super good too, and he loved it! Fresh tomatoes, spinach and a tomato cream sauce. Seriously, plate licking delicious-ness.

025

But truth be told, I haven’t ever had a bad dish from Noodles!

I am sure that you know February is heart disease awareness month, but you probably don’t think of pasta as being the healthiest meal option. Noodles is trying to change that thinking with their whole wheat pasta! They also have tons of menu choices that are available for 500 calories or less. My all-time favorite is Japanese pan noodles with shrimp is one of the under 500 calorie options!

They have this awesome “cheat sheet” of options that you can get for 500 calories or less. Check it out here.

Now, here comes the good part. . . one lucky reader can win 2 free meal vouchers from Noodles and Company to try out some of their awesome meals!

To enter this giveaway, simply comment on this post, telling me which “under 500 calorie” meal choice you would pick.  I will randomly select one winner next Monday March 4, 2013.

For additional giveaway entries you may:

  • Tweet some variation of the following: “Hoping to win a @noodlescompany free meal from @runs4cupcakes”
  • Make sure to leave a comment letting me know that you tweeted!
