Trail Mix

I love trail mix. It is the perfect afternoon snack, pre-run fuel, car road trip travel buddy, dessert… anytime!! While I love the convenience of pre-bought selections at the store, and you all know about my love for the Target trail mix selection, trail mix is so easy to make and way cheaper if you put it together yourself.

Here is a list of ingredients to start from and how you put them together is up to you!!

  • banana chips
  • dried fruit – raisins, craisins, apricots, cherries, mangos, etc.
  • something chocolate – M and M’s, espresso beans, fruit, mini chocolate chips
  • nuts – peanuts, cashews, almonds, walnuts
  • yogurt covered raisins or fruit or nuts
  • cereal – kix, cherrios

You want a balance between sweet and salty, chocolate and plain, crunchy and chewy. The possibilities are endless!

Some of my favorite combos:

The Classic—> peanuts, M and M’s, and raisins

Coffee lovers –> chocolate covered espresso beans, almonds, dried apricots

Go Bananas –> banana chips, mini chocolate chips, walnuts, dried cherries

Halloween mix –> candy corn, M and M’s, peanuts

And remember if you don’t have time to make your own, there is always the awesome selection at Target! Winking smile

  1. My family LOVES trail mix. Before our girls were born, my husband and I would take an annual trip to a National Park, and we’d consume massive amounts of trail mix. We love traditional with a twist – Reese’s Pieces instead of M&Ms! We even gave out little bags of trail mix as the favors at our wedding, with a picture of the spot on the AT where we got engaged. Our oldest daughter is already hooked too, and I’m sure little sister will love it too!

  2. I LOVE trail mix, especially if it involves chocolate and some sort of nuts! I like your idea to add cereal. Have you tried the Honey Kix cereal? It is really good!

  3. Oh goodness don’t even get me started on trail mix. It’s in my top five for favorite snacks, possibly even my top three. I lose any sort of self-control that I might have and keep going back for one more bite, then another. I have to make sure and grab one peanut, one raisin, and a chocolate in each bite.

  5. I love making trail-mix but it can be dangerous sometimes unless I portion it off into smaller servings! Yesterday I stopped at Target and impulsively bought the peanut butter and jelly trail-mix. It’s delicious!

      I am glad you liked that one – I picked that one up last time and didn’t love it. I don’t know the jelly pieces were sorta weird? My husband chowed it down though. . .

  6. I love trail mix! I have a mix from Costco right now that I really like with almonds, dried cherries and cranberries, pistachios and I add mini chocolate chips 🙂

  7. LOL – you and your love for trail mix! Next time I get sample packs at work, I know exactly who they’re going to!! I try to avoid it because I could easily eat an entire tub of Target’s Monster Mix. I obviously have no self-control when it comes to sweets!

      Becky, you are already like my favorite person but you would seriously be my favorite person ever if you did that! And I don’t think self control and trail mix even belong in the same sentence together. 😉

  8. trail mix is my weakness. it seems so harmless and innocent. but it doesn’t feel harmless and innocent after I’ve eaten an entire bag in 3 days. like seriously those calories don’t count do they? I usually mix a few different mixs from either cub, rainbow, co-ops or whole foods bulk. otherwise tj’s has some great ones. but like I said if it’s in bulk and doesn’t have a nutrition fact label, then it’s fair game!
