If you would have told me 2 years ago that I would be writing a post about how much I love my treadmill, I would have laughed in your face and said no way!
You see, I have always been an outside runner. I love the seasons in MN. Getting out in the HOT HOT summer and sweating it out. Feeling the fall breeze or the spring rain. Heck, I even love to run in the winter – through the fresh fallen snow. Each run, each season, bringing something new and wonderful.
We got a treadmill when I was pregnant with Luke. Suddenly the fresh fallen snow was more of a risk with the layer of ice underneath it and I was not willing to take that risk. So, I told Scott to buy me a treadmill so I could continue running through the winter with my pregnant belly.
And that’s where my love affair began. .. You see, with a treadmill, especially one that’s just downstairs, there are so many benefits.
You always know what to wear. No guessing what the wind speed is outside, trying to look at how much the trees are swaying out the living room windows (because it is always windy in Mankato), no more looking through all your running clothes to come up with the right combination for the weather outside. Just throw on shorts and a tank and you are ready to go.
You can listen to music, watch TV, or review body pump choreography all while getting your run in. I am seriously addicted to Netflix Instant Play on my iPad while running. . . And it is so easy to blast pump music while looking at the booklet they send you with the choreography on it. . . try that while running outside!
You can run during baby nap time. . . and keep the baby monitor right next to you.
I can chat with Scott and watch Luke play while I am getting in my 30 min run after work before dinner. Obviously, I would rather that we could all go out for a family run together and hopefully this summer we can do more of that. . .but with winter and a foot injury that Scott is dealing with. . . this is the best compromise.
Does anyone else miss the Jetsons? I seriously loved that show. . .
Speed work is way easy.. . just push the little up button and BOOM you’re running faster! Much harder to do this outside. . . I find it much easier to push myself to run faster on a treadmill than outside. You can set a certain pace/time goal and know exactly how fast, far, and length of time you are running.
Incline walking is no joke. Towards the end of my pregnancy and right after I had Luke, I used incline walking for a kick @ss workout without the stress of running. Want to work up a sweat quick? Bump up the incline on that bad boy!
Now, there are downsides to treadmill running of course and there are a lot of treadmill haters out there, but sometimes (and ok, lots of times, especially this winter in MN), the treadmill is awesome and I love it!
Anyone else feel like we should form a treadmill support group? Hi, my name’s Katie and I love my treadmill.
