Treadmill Love

If you would have told me 2 years ago that I would be writing a post about how much I love my treadmill, I would have laughed in your face and said no way!

You see, I have always been an outside runner. I love the seasons in MN. Getting out in the HOT HOT summer and sweating it out. Feeling the fall breeze or the spring rain. Heck, I even love to run in the winter – through the fresh fallen snow. Each run, each season, bringing something new and wonderful.

We got a treadmill when I was pregnant with Luke. Suddenly the fresh fallen snow was more of a risk with the layer of ice underneath it and I was not willing to take that risk. So, I told Scott to buy me a treadmill so I could continue running through the winter with my pregnant belly. Winking smile

And that’s where my love affair began. .. You see, with a treadmill, especially one that’s just downstairs, there are so many benefits.

You always know what to wear. No guessing what the wind speed is outside, trying to look at how much the trees are swaying out the living room windows (because it is always windy in Mankato), no more looking through all your running clothes to come up with the right combination for the weather outside. Just throw on shorts and a tank and you are ready to go.

You can listen to music, watch TV, or review body pump choreography all while getting your run in. I am seriously addicted to Netflix Instant Play on my iPad while running. . . And it is so easy to blast pump music while looking at the booklet they send you with the choreography on it. . . try that while running outside! Winking smile

You can run during baby nap time. . . and keep the baby monitor right next to you.

I can chat with Scott and watch Luke play while I am getting in my 30 min run after work before dinner. Obviously, I would rather that we could all go out for a family run together and hopefully this summer we can do more of that. . .but with winter and a foot injury that Scott is dealing with. . . this is the best compromise.

Does anyone else miss the Jetsons? I seriously loved that show. . .

Speed work is way easy.. . just push the little up button and BOOM you’re running faster! Winking smile Much harder to do this outside. . . I find it much easier to push myself to run faster on a treadmill than outside. You can set a certain pace/time goal and know exactly how fast, far, and length of time you are running.

Incline walking is no joke. Towards the end of my pregnancy and right after I had Luke, I used incline walking for a kick @ss workout without the stress of running. Want to work up a sweat quick? Bump up the incline on that bad boy!

Now, there are downsides to treadmill running of course and there are a lot of treadmill haters out there, but sometimes (and ok, lots of times, especially this winter in MN), the treadmill is awesome and I love it!

Anyone else feel like we should form a treadmill support group? Hi, my name’s Katie and I love my treadmill. Winking smile

  1. We bought a treadmill when I was pregnant with #2, and it was definitely a lifesaver when I didn’t want to run alone outside and during maternity leave. Now that it’s so nice outside, I’m glad to let the treadmill gather dust for a while, but I know I’ll be cranking out the miles this winter!

Agreed! I don’t use the treadmill when it is nice outside and I can take Luke with me in the jogging stroller!!

  3. I love this. A positive post about treadmills; you just don’t see these too often. Reading this really made me appreciate my treadmill in the basement. It gets used frequently although I often huff at the thought of going down to the “dreadmill,” it’s really such a blessing to have it!

  4. We’re moving soon. When I found a cheap table on KSL (like Craigs List), my hub asked if I’d wait til we moved. When I found a good treadmill for cheap, he said, “Let’s get it please!”

Hopefully once we move, we’ll add a treadmill to our lives. Perhaps even before then. There’s a beauty to just pressing a button and running that is kind of comforting.

I agree – and good luck with moving! I am not looking forward to having to move our treadmill – man that thing is heavy!!

  5. I am starting to enjoy using the treadmill at the gym… I wish I could bring my iPad there but I feel super self-conscious about it, I have yet to see anyone else do it so I just watch tv/movies on my iPhone. And I agree, there are some great benefits to running with a treadmill!

I love the treadmill. My first choice is outside buy during those Florida summers its a lifesaver!!

  7. Oh man. I wish I had your love for treadmills! I automatically get lightheaded when I step on one… Is that weird? I seriously feel like it is going to throw me backwards, haha! Maybe once I have a house, I’ll find a love for treadmills 🙂

I took your advice from Twitter and hit up my treadmill today! I walked instead of ran though. I’m definitely a treadmill walker or interval run/walker. Bless you who can run for longer than 10 minutes at a time on the treadmill! I always get stuck focusing on the time and give up. That’s okay, I like a good walk now and again. 🙂

Good for you!! I think treadmill walking can be awesome.. . I especially like a mix of intervals and incline work.

  9. You are so cute!
I haven’t run on my treadmill in awhile. It frustrates the outlet and then turns off in the middle of the run. Maybe when we move…
It’s true that you can do speedwork so easily on a treadmill. That was my last treadmill workout (before we dropped our membership) and it was fantastic.
